Fun Aunt Rachel’s Book Drive: Bringing Holiday Joy to Kitsap’s Foster Kids

By klrw1161@kw.com November 8, 2024

Three years ago, Rachel Harris saw an inspiring post online about a holiday book drive and immediately knew she wanted to bring that same joy to kids in her own community. The idea of collecting books as gifts was a unique way to make the season brighter for children in need, and after some thought, she decided to focus her efforts on the Kitsap Foster Care Association (KFCA). The KFCA holds an annual Christmas party, and books would be a perfect addition to their holiday gift selection for the foster kids they serve.

As someone who lovingly wears the title “Fun Aunt Rachel” to many kiddos, this project holds a special place in her heart. She’s also deeply rooted in supporting her community year-round, volunteering regularly with the Bremerton Backpack Brigade and the Bremerton FoodLine. The book drive is just one more way she channels her care for kids in Kitsap County.

In 2022, her first year was a success, with Rachel collecting an impressive 338 books. Last year, she managed to top that number, collecting over 500 books—and this year, she’s aiming even higher. What makes this year’s drive especially exciting is that Rachel will get to be on the front lines, helping to hand out the books at the KFCA Christmas party—a first-time experience she can’t wait for.

With her community spirit and dedication, Rachel hopes to make this holiday season even more magical for the kids in Kitsap County, one book at a time.
